The Jean Shepherd Project
Collecting, Trading and Sharing Jean Shepherd
Recordings Since 1972
(formerly the
Fatheadcentral Shep Traders Group)
UPDATE 2006
01 15
For the past
our or five years the JSP has distributed its Jean Shepherd mp3 files via CD-ROM
discs. The way it worked was this: anyone who wished to receive these files
would contact us by email, we would put their name on a waiting list and as we
burned new discs we would send them to the next name on that list. We hoped
that the recipients of those discs would copy them and return the originals to
be redistributed to the next person, and so on, thus keeping down the number of
new discs we had to buy and take the time to burn. We had hoped that this would
be the prevailing option, but we also made allowances for persons who requested
the discs but did not have the technical knowledge or a properly equipped
computer to copy the discs. In those cases we encouraged these requestors to
keep the discs with our compliments.
For a time,
this system worked well. The vast majority who got the JSP discs borrowed them,
copied them and returned them with a couple of dollars to reimburse us for our
postage costs, and often extra copies and/or blank discs were also given, for
which we are very grateful. Some (but sadly not as many as we would have liked)
who opted to keep the discs have sent us blank discs in return, while others
reimbursed us for our expenses, for which we are also grateful. All of the
different kinds of assistance we have received in the past has
been very much appreciated because it has been a great help in keeping this
operation running.
However, as the popularity of our service has
grown, we have found that the old system is no longer tenable. There are many
reasons for this but all of them have at their core the fact that it has taken
up too much of what little time we have to devote to the JSP and its goals. As
mentioned elsewhere on this website, the JSP is a tiny organization that is
understaffed by dedicated Shepherd fans (Fatheads, if you will) who have been
putting in a heroic effort and devoting as much time as they can to it after
they have fulfilled their work and family obligations. Unfortunately, it hasn’t
been enough to keep us moving forward as efficiently as we need to. The failure
of this unworkable system has resulted in (among other things) unacceptably
long waiting lines for the discs, and numerous delays in making the tons of new
Shep material available. (JSP Set #3, for example, should have been released
three years ago.)
After many
brainstorming sessions we have worked out a new system which we will be
implementing soon. The new improved system promises to free up more of our time
and will result in your getting your Shep mp3’s faster, and much more Shep
material becoming available. In order to accomplish this, we will not be taking
requests for the JSP discs during a short transition period, starting
immediately. If you’ve made a request recently (I see our e-mailbox is nearly
full) we will honor that request under the old system. Unless we are unable to
clear up all of the loose ends we plan to start taking new requests on 2006 03
01. We suggest you visit this site again after that date.
